TPS Work Permits Extended for El Salvadorians

El Salvador was originally designated for TPS in 2001 due a series of very destructive earthquakes. The Trump Administration had originally planned to end TPS for El Salvadorians on January 2, 2020.
However, the Trump Administration announced on Monday that it agreed to extend the TPS work permits for El Salvadorians through January 4, 2021 as well as that it will give protected El Salvadorians an additional 365 days post completion of the El Salvador TPS related lawsuit to return to their country. These extensions were granted out of the concern that forcing these approximately 250,000 El Salvadorians to quickly return to their country could cause mass migration to the U.S. from El Salvador.
As part of the series of joint arrangements between the two countries, El Salvador will allow the U.S. to send El Salvador asylum seekers back to El Salvador. Current USCIS Acting Director, Ken Cuccinelli clarified via tweet that the Trump Administration did not formally extend TPS for El Salvador, but rather just extended the TPS work permits.
